A typical scene in AutoCAD.
The AutoCAD 2017 installation on your Mac starts in the /Applications folder with the app icon in the dock. To access the application, choose Automator from the Apple menu and choose New Application. Name the new application AutoCAD 2017 (which may not be the default name the installer used), and click Create. If asked, you can save the application file to your desktop. The installation process will begin. If your machine has a password-protected log-in screen, you will be asked to enter it. Once logged in, you will be greeted with an AutoCAD window like the one shown below.
The AutoCAD 2017 interface contains three windows, each with a specific function.
The Start dialog box (Automatically opens when the application is run) lists AutoCAD 2017 for your system. If you have previously installed AutoCAD, its path is in the field at the top of the window.
The Properties window contains settings for the app. You can change the product version, time zone and language of the app (if needed) from the Global Settings drop-down menu in the app window. You can also click the Options button to change the color palette used in the app. Clicking the License button shows the current license for AutoCAD. You can change your license (from the options window) or reset it to a default setting (if you have not purchased a license for AutoCAD 2017) by clicking the Reset button.
The Tools window shows the Tools palette (Autodesk calls it the Toolbox), which contains all the current tools for use in the current drawing session. A toolbar is available to the right of the palette that contains access to other windows (as discussed in the next section), a navigation tool (which is discussed in the next section), and most importantly, the last window in the dialog box, the current drawing window.
The drawing window contains the currently selected drawing, all layers of that drawing, and the layers currently selected. The current line style is marked with a red line. The thumbnail window lists all AutoCAD objects in the current drawing, including those saved as an external file.
The Properties window and Tools palette have a fairly steep learning curve, and you will find the user manual useful.
Here are some tips and suggestions to help you get started with AutoCAD 2017:

Any object that can be drawn or modeled may be embedded in a drawing, whether a geometric element or a 3D model.
Users can use scripts, macros or SQL database commands to automate the creation of new objects or to update existing ones. For example, they can “record” the draw commands for an object and create a script that can automatically insert the object into a drawing or create a script to automatically update the geometry of an object when an attribute value changes.
Use of a scripting language was added to AutoCAD 2007.
Scripting in AutoCAD is based on the ADXS scripting language. ADXS stands for AutoCAD Extended Scripting. AutoCAD Extended Scripting (ADXS) is a single language for programming AutoCAD from the interface (menus, toolbars, dialog boxes) to the drawing commands. It consists of a general purpose scripting language and AutoCAD’s specific objects and commands.
ADXS is a single language and is built on top of ECMAScript. ECMAScript is a standardized, interpreted language and is normally used for client-side scripting for the web. ECMAScript is highly programmable. ECMAScript is used on the client side to access the database that stores the data, and the server side to send pages to the client.
AutoCAD supports both procedural and object-oriented scripting languages.
AutoCAD was originally programmed using an interpreted language called MacroBasic. MacroBasic was first released in version 1.0 of AutoCAD in 1982.
MacroBasic was designed for machine translation of traditional macro language. It used, as the interpreter, BASIC interpreter from Dartmouth. It was called MacroBasic because it was intended to be a replacement for “traditional macro” languages.
In 1986, the MacroBasic interpreter was replaced by a compiled, object-oriented version of Lisp called Design Basic.
Design Basic interpreter used C++ (languages were defined by an extension of C) for the “machine” of the interpreter. The “computer” of the interpreter was a line of programming code for the Design Basic language.
Design Basic was designed by the same people who created the ADXS Language; it was upgraded to the new ADXS language in AutoCAD 3.0, and re-released in AutoCAD 2010 (AutoCAD 2010, Release 1).

and other factors, making the system very flexible and allowing a great deal of personalization of that advice. It was one of the first systems I ever met that made this possible, and made it easy to make your own adjustments and even allow others to customize your experience with that advice. There is so much flexibility with it, and I have found it to be very useful. I’m sure that by the time it’s finished it will likely be the industry standard.
While, I suppose, it’s technically still not a completely open system like I’m describing in this post, it’s getting close. It was recently announced that some of the last remaining pieces of the platform were being finalized for an official release. What do you see as the main draw of the self-build process?
It’s one of the things I love about this system. It is incredibly comprehensive and probably one of the most complete and flexible self-build options out there. It allows you to do almost anything you want to do to your home, and I’ve yet to run into a scenario that it doesn’t support. It was the reason I was attracted to it and, really, there isn’t a single reason I’m not a fan.
That being said, I know that there is a large number of people out there who are concerned about certain aspects of the system. For example, some people are concerned about their taxes and what they’ll owe. That’s a valid concern, but I’ve talked to a lot of people who have also been concerned about their potential tax bill who have decided to use the system. I can’t tell you how many people have told me, “I’m not going to build my own home because of the tax bill,” but after using the system, none of them are considering it anymore.
It’s also one of the biggest questions I’m asked when introducing a potential client to the system. “What if I get a tax bill? What’s the procedure?” My answer is, “That’s not a concern that I need to worry about.” I’m sure that there are scenarios where this will lead to a tax bill, but that is a concern
What’s New In AutoCAD?
Adding two-sided arrows in AutoCAD 2120 and 2120 DX, and AutoCAD LT 2020, and adding text to arrows in AutoCAD 2023, with Richard Jeffery Boyce.

Editing Files in the Cloud with AutoCAD LTC
With AutoCAD LT 2020 or AutoCAD 2023, you can edit files in the cloud, or just access them from the cloud as an option in AutoCAD LT.
With Edit in the Cloud, we’re also introducing a new way to collaborate in the cloud and on your mobile devices using Autodesk Vault. See video of this in action.
Audio Streaming in AutoCAD
Audio streaming in AutoCAD is faster and more reliable. We’ve rewritten the audio and video drivers to support high-bandwidth streaming, and changed the way the driver interacts with your audio application. This is similar to the way we’ve done audio streaming for years with AutoCAD LT and for years in industry with AutoCAD Mechanical.

Benefits for AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD
Benefits for AutoCAD users include:
A faster audio experience than ever before
Removes limits on the number of streams per CAD application
Simplified audio settings in recent releases
AutoCAD LT 2120 is the first CAD product to include AutoCAD Vault. It is designed for architects, designers, and other professionals who work in a team to generate collaborative files. With AutoCAD Vault, you can share files, collaborate, and work on the same file in a secure, online environment. When you add files to your project in the cloud, Vault will automatically save and sync your changes back to your local workstation. The added security of Vault adds layers of protection to your designs.
