# The Pen tool
The Pen tool is probably the most common tool used in Photoshop for drawing and painting. You can use it in several different ways:
* **Draw a simple line** with the Pen tool by clicking anywhere on the canvas and then drawing with the tool.
* **Draw a rectangle** by dragging from one corner to another and then click when you’ve hit the point you want the rectangle to be.
* **Draw a crosshair** (a circle or square) by drawing a line that intersects the selected layer. The crosshair is very useful for painting directly on top of other objects without killing them.
* **Draw a freeform shape** by clicking to place the first point, dragging the tool to the second point, and then clicking. The dimensions of the new shape are locked at the distance between your first and second clicks. At any point during the drawing process, press Shift+Ctrl+D (Shift+Command+D) to lock the dimensions.

To optimize computer performance and battery life when working with large files, you can turn off online and application features. Click Settings > Preferences > Advanced, and then choose “Look and Feel > Use the Automatically Detected Settings” to see the available options.
When choosing a rotation angle, keep in mind that the more vertical a photo is, the less likely it is to rotate properly. Placing it on a flat surface will also prevent the correct rotation. Avoid attaching a photo to the top or bottom of a book with a spine, if possible.
There are several tools to crop photos:
Crop
Crop is a tool that is available under the Edit menu. It allows you to choose a crop point, a border, and a ratio of the cropped image.

Use the Option or Shift keys to make the clone rotation, scale, and color adjustments.
Clear
Clear is a tool that is available under the Edit menu. This tool allows you to add the background from the original photo to the clone. Use the Shift key to make the clone rotation, scale, and color adjustments.

The select tool is a tool that is available under the Select menu. Clicking on a photo with the Select tool selects the highlighted area.
Quick Selection

Lasso
