1. Start by opening a file from your hard drive. For this example, I use a picture I took of a pin on my wall.
2. On the menu bar, choose File. Select Open, and navigate to the location of the file you want to work with. In this case, locate and open your _Image 1.jpg_ file, which is on your computer’s desktop.

4. The next step is to place a new layer on top of this existing layer. To do this, click the New Layer icon. The New Layer icon is located on the bottom left of your Layers panel, as shown in Figure 2-1. Type in the name **Layer 1**, and press Enter (Return).
5. This creates a new layer on top of the background layer. As a result of creating a new layer, the background in your image window is now red. Your Layers panel now looks like Figure 2-2.

Creating a New Layer
To add a new layer to your image, you can either create a new layer in your Layers panel or click and drag the New Layer icon to a new location on the screen. Either method works. In this example, I create a new layer by clicking and dragging the New Layer icon. Drag the new layer to the middle of the upper portion of your image window, as shown in Figure 2-3. Make sure you do not drag the layer onto the red background.

Adding a New Layer with Transparency
To insert a layer with a transparent background, drag the icon to a new location on the Layers panel or on the desktop. Then activate the Transparency check box by clicking its icon, as shown in Figure 2-4.

1. Create a Simple Image in Photoshop Elements
Step 1: Open an Image from the Camera
