A Stitch In Time: NASA’s Solar Probe Faces Summer’s Worst Storm

This image released by NASA shows the mission’s “fin” as it awaits deployment. This week NASA planned to unfurl a supersonic probe that will fly through the blinding clouds of space solar wind in order to learn why the sun’s surface isn’t heated to billions of degrees.

NASA is ready to let loose a $1.2 billion spacecraft that will navigate the perilous chaos of space to visit the sun, said Ed Stone, a director of the agency’s heliophysics division.

Launched last month, the mission is designed to test one of humanity’s most profound questions: Where does the heat in the sun come from?

“This is a fundamentally important issue to understand,” said Stone, a physicist and principal investigator for the project. “It’s pretty extraordinary how it does what it does,” he said, referring to the sun.

Part flying bomb, part inchworm, the Solar Probe Plus will fly closer to the sun than any man-made object. It will dive through the solar wind, the charged particles that zip around the sun, than will venture inside the sun itself. Sun sensors and delicate instruments will measure the data.

NASA has been planning the mission for a decade. In 2002 and 2003, the craft flew through hundreds of thousands of miles of space, and suffered a failure of its sensors that had to be fixed with a safety feature.

It escaped with only minor burns, and the damaged instrument was repaired with aluminum shielding, and a streamlined design to save weight. This mission is much more sophisticated, said Stone. The craft has better sensors that will measure very fine temperature differences on the edge of the sun. “It’s one of the more thrilling missions ever,” he said.

Stone is hoping that soon, with new sensors, the probe will be able to take images in the sun’s atmosphere, measure energy and heat at temperatures of as much as seven million degrees Fahrenheit, and plow through the solar wind.

Sunshine will be blocked out for up to two weeks. The probe was designed to survive only fleeting encounters with the sun, but its creators say that even if its sensors are blinded, it can be controlled remotely to return home safely.
