In Space Tyrant players assume the role of a representative of an overseas power. The player navigates a fleet of bombers and fighter planes through the game’s 22 sector, destroying the power’s headquarters and enemy forces. Enemies include mech creatures, mini UFOs, and enemy bombers and fighters. The game features two-player co-operative and competitive modes.

The game premiered at the Los Angeles Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 1993, and was later released in Japan in July. It was backed by Sega.

Overview
Space Tyrant is an aircraft carrier battle simulation in which players navigate their own fleet of bombers and interceptor aircraft through a series of missions in five different zones. In the game’s story mode, the player is a member of a US or Japanese force that must destroy the weapons being sold at an arms fair by an enemy power that is trying to recover its lost colonies.

The weapons on offer include bipedal robot fighters, aerial drones, and giant robot beasts. Many of the drones, and all of the robot beasts, are “munitions robots”, “Osprey robots”, or “Space Tyrant drones”. They are designed to be easily destroyed by the player’s ships, similar to conventional “robot enemies” in other Japanese games. Two of the new enemy boss craft are missile-firing Space Tyrant drones. The other three types of drones are combat-type robots. The player controls four powerful fighter planes at all times; one a bomber squad (which can also drop bombs or missiles at will), one a group of interceptors, and two attack planes. In the story mode, the ship levels are automatically loaded into the game when the player goes into the level screen.

The game utilizes an analog control interface, a common feature of early 8-bit videogames. The player acts by using an aircraft control stick to direct their plane’s take-off and landing, and controlling their speed while in the air. The speed of planes in air combat is also determined by the speed, altitude, airfoil settings (the “slow” setting is for slower speed) and several other settings that affect speed.
