Plot
When the 12-year-old Billy Bailey is born, his mother and father die one day apart from each other and he is left an orphan. He is found by the local barber and sent to live in a nearby boarding school for boys. Years later, after his father dies, to Billy the school is mean, the barber is good and the horses a nuisance. One day, about a year before his eighteenth birthday, Billy meets the barber, who also owns a horse named Doc. Doc agrees to take Billy to the Pony Express station in Missouri to learn how to be a rider for the mail route and become his first rider.

Along the way Billy befriends the others, Butch McCalla, a braver boy named Jimmy, and the overweight and lazy Richard White, who turns out to be Billy’s best friend. White is quite the ladies’ man, treating Billy and the others like his personal servants and often serving them food and water for free. Billy especially likes being with Jimmy. Soon, when White carries a boy named Dan Collins, a mere young lad of 14, on his back in the relay station after he ran away from the station, White is told to return Dan to the station. Butch, who also wishes to escape the station, promises to accompany Billy and his new friend to the section of train out of town. Although White follows them on horseback, he is unable to keep up with the three boys, and White is forced to return to the station alone.
