  Hello, welcome to a rather special installment of the best of a yet special Halloween! Today, we’re going to be talking about a game that I made in the Spooktober Visual Novel Jam. This was a terrific year for the jam, and I’d like to bring back some of the highlights to share with you here on my website. If you couldn’t see it live, you can also watch the jam videos here.

  In this jam, I was given a prompt, and told to make a story based around the idea of nuclear and biological weapons, inspired by the fundamental knowledge of that time, the fact that Cold War was still on, and the nuclear tests that were going on at the time.

  I began my story by picturing the scene of a moment many people know by heart, the iconic photo of the mushroom cloud rising over Hiroshima, Japan. I then brainstormed what I could do with this prompt that would create something interesting and different, and decided to create a stylized world where people in the present were stuck in the world of the past and had to solve a puzzle to find a way out. For me, this became a really key moment of the story.

  I then made the very important decision to make this story a kinetic narrative no roots, that is, a story without branches or stylistic writing. This was a decision I made quickly, as I wanted to keep the action flowing as I wanted to not have to think about what style to use, or what scene to end with.

  I soon realized that the best way to express this story was to make it a parody of the classical Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. This form of myth is much like a video game, where the players find their way through a labyrinth, reach an altar, and slay the evil king who’s being held prisoner behind a locked door. In our game, we followed the rules set by the myth, and could do anything we wished within the narrative.

  Next, I brought in my voice actor, and we set about creating a script for the characters in the story. One important thing was that we had to act in this story as if we were characters in

  I can’t believe it’s been almost a year! When I last posted, I had only been practicing for a year, but I now have been doing it for over 3 years!

  Getting out of the closet and into Clergy Splode has been a wonderful experience, and I’m still experiencing all sorts of new things about Clergyfinder. Who knew replying to inquiries and actually making things happen were two such different things?

  Through my work with Clergy Splode, I am starting to feel as though I have some room to stretch, and I’m looking forward to releasing some stuff that I’ve been thinking about for a long time!

  My goal is to be totally honest and transparent, and while I may ramble, I won’t be afraid to follow my heart.

  Some of what I have to say will fall into the same categories of the Clergyfinder conversations with so many people, and I’m prepared for that. As I have always said, I am dedicated to answering honestly (to the best of my ability) every single person who has had a direct part in bringing me into the center of the Church online.

  When that conversation is over, I’m unsure of what comes next. I know that I’m still open to the Voice.

  This will be a collection of revelations, omissions, and juicy bits of Truth, and I hope that you enjoy them. Remember that my brain is still trying to wrap itself around all this. When I’m finally comfortable with it all, I’ll be more thorough about everything.
